Stelazine

Stelazine schizophrenia treatment is an antipsychotic drug that has been linked to serious adverse effects like Tardive Dyskinesia. A potentially permanent muscle disorder, Tardive Dyskinesia risks should be avoided or reduced whenever possible. Some doctors prescribe Stelazine for things other than schizophrenia, such as anxiety, but due to the Stelazine side effects, it is recommended that the antipsychotic treatment only be sought when other options have failed.

Women and elderly are considered to be a more at-risk Tardive Dyskinesia group when using antipsychotics like Stelazine. Patients that have or have had a brain tumor, breast cancer, intestinal blockage, glaucoma, heart or liver disease, or seizures should avoid the use of Stelazine or apply extreme caution if choosing to take Stelazine. Another risk of all antipsychotic drugs like Stelazine is Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, a life-threatening condition. Especially in highly potent antipsychotics such as Stelazine, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome becomes a higher risk.

Many people in the psychiatric field have argued that while there are risks for every medication, the risks of Tardive Dyskinesia were outweighed by the benefits antipsychotics like Stelazine brought schizophrenia patients. Others argue antipsychotics and Stelazine are over prescribed and should only be used when alternate treatment options are not responsive or in severe symptom cases.
