Serentil

Serentil antipsychotic drug has been linked to very serious adverse effects. Used for the treatment of psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, Serentil should only be used when no other treatment option is available because of the risks of suffering serious Serentil side effects. The links between Serentil and adverse effect such as Tardive Dyskinesia, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, and Central Nervous System Depressants have continued to be reported, causing controversy regarding antipsychotics as a whole.

In September 2000, the FDA announced a boxed warning would be put on Serentil labels to warn of the prolonged QTc interval in a dose related manner that has occurred with Serentil patients, leading to torsade de pointes-type arrhythmias and sudden death. When the “Important Drug Warning” was issued, the FDA stated Serentil would only be indicated for schizophrenic patients who have unsuccessfully sought alternate treatments with other antipsychotic drugs first.

If being considered for Serentil, patients should have a baseline ECG performed and serum potassium levels measured. The serum potassium should be normalized if considering Serentil and the QTc interval should be monitored if deciding to take Serentil. The FDA advised any Serentil patients to be fully informed of the risks involved with the antipsychotic, as well as to be considered for an alternate treatment method than Serentil.
