About Reglan®

Reglan® is a medication that helps the stomach empty its contents more quickly into the small intestine. It does this by making the muscles of those organs contract. The drug is very helpful for patients who have heartburn and GERD (gastroesophageal disease). Patients take a dose a half hour before meals and bedtime and should feel relief from the uncomfortable symptoms of these conditions.

The medication also is used in other patients who for various reasons need their stomachs to be emptied more quickly. These include patients with:

  • Heartburn and GERD (gastroesophageal disease)
  • Post-surgery to control nausea
  • Nausea from chemotherapy
  • Diabetic gastroparesis, which is characterized by heartburn, vomiting of undigested food, feeling full to soon when eating, weight loss, bloating of the abdomen, fluctuating glucose levels, lack of appetite, GERD and spasms of the stomach wall

Patients might also be given Reglan® to empty the stomach before an x-ray.

When a Lawsuit is Necessary

Despite its usefulness for many circumstances, Reglan® has been linked to an increase in the risk of tardive dyskinesia, which is characterized by abnormal movements of the face and fingers. People with tardive dyskinesia might have the following symptoms:

  • Tongue thrusting
  • Rapid eye blinking
  • Grimacing
  • Smacking of the lips
  • Uncontrolled movement of the fingers

In addition to tardive dyskinesia, Reglan® may cause mild to severe depression, drowsiness, fatigue and restlessness. Some patients have reported Parkinson-like symptoms such as slow movements, rigidity, tremor, or a mask-like appearance of the face.

In patients younger than 30, the drug can cause involuntary movement of the arms and legs and changes in breathing — loud or labored breathing in the first couple of days of treatment.

A Reglan® lawsuit might be appropriate for patients who are diagnosed with tardive dyskinesia or another serious side effect that persists after treatment is complete. The purpose of a Reglan® lawsuit is to seek compensation for the suffering these patients have endured and the challenges they continue to face.
