What is Reglan® ?
Reglan® is an oral and an injectable medication that helps the stomach empty its contents into the small intestine by increasing the contractions of those organs. For most people, it is a very effective medication to treat slow stomach emptying in cases of:
- Heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Nausea from chemotherapy
- Nausea and vomiting after surgery
- In patients who have kidney disease
- In patients with liver disease such as jaundice or cirrhosis
- Migraine headaches
- To help the stomach empty its contents before an x-ray exam
- In diabetics whose stomachs empty too slowly
But, the medication has some serious side effects. One of these is tardive dyskinesia, a condition that may not cease even when the drug is discontinued. Tardive dyskinesia is characterized by peculiar motions of the face and sometimes fingers as well. These motions may include:
- Grimacing
- Rapid eye blinking
- Pursing or smacking of the lips
- Twitching fingers
Symptoms might continue long after a patient stops taking Reglan®. With careful management, in some cases, symptoms might improve or discontinue over time.
