Loxitane

Loxitane is an antipsychotic used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia. Older antipsychotics impair the ability to think, learn, and remember, and cognitive dysfunction with antipsychotic use has become a very large issue. Since schizophrenia is diagnosed at the mean age of 20, long-term treatment must occur, however antipsychotics like Loxitane are linked to serious adverse effects.

Traditionally, Loxitane and antipsychotics have been parkinsonian-type movement disorders, such as Tardive Dyskinesia. Since the incidence of Tardive Dyskinesia has been seen to become more likely as treatment periods become longer, using Loxitane for years will greatly increase risk of developing Tardive Dyskinesia. In the past, Tardive Dyskinesia was not thought to occur in Loxitane and other antipsychotic patients for at least a couple years of being on the drug therapy, but now Tardive Dyskinesia has been witnessed in Loxitane and other antipsychotic patients after just a few months.

A high incidence of Tardive Dyskinesia has been estimated to have affected the over two million U.S. schizophrenia patients using neuroleptic medications to manage symptoms. Despite this, there is still an absence of real research on the links between Tardive Dyskinesia and neuroleptics.
