Geodon
Geodon antipsychotic medication is used to help treat symptoms of schizophrenia.
The Geodon patient summary noted that while Geodon can be an effective
schizophrenia treatment, the risks of Geodon are high because of the
way Geodon can change the electrical currents in a patient’s heart
at a greater frequency than other antipsychotic options. An article
by Public Citizen Health Research Group Director that was published
in the May 1, 2002 Journal of the American Medical Association stated
the “new antipsychotic drug Geodon -with the serious problem of
potential heart toxicity--probably should not have been approved.”
The risk of suffering heart toxicity because of the use of Geodon can
be greatly increased with the use of other medications, making it especially
important to thoroughly evaluate alternate treatments to avoid Geodon
adverse effects. In addition, Geodon was not required to include a black
box warning on the drug’s labeling even though six other drugs
with prolongation of the QTc interval had one. For more information
